Loving Spoonful connects people with good food in Kingston and area through innovative, collaborative programs and outreach. The fundamental principle underlying Loving Spoonful’s work is that all people need good food to thrive. Loving Spoonful recognizes that food is a powerful community builder and engages in partnerships across the region to create social inclusion and a strong local food system.
Loving Spoonful recognizes poverty as the primary barrier to accessing good food and renounces the continuation of poverty in Canada. Loving Spoonful promotes, supports, and champions programs and policy change that realizes social, environmental, and economic justice.
Loving Spoonful builds community around good food across Kingston and area by providing programs and championing policies that build capacity in the local food system. We envision a resilient community and local food system, that nourishes all people and supports dignified access to good food.
Funds raised through The Charity Gala with Queen’s University Masters of Business Administration class will help Loving Spoonful to:
-
Expand the GROW Project to focus on a school-wide initiative
-
In the past, the GROW Project focused on grades 4-8. However, moving forward, we want to ensure the entire school (K-8) can benefit from the GROW Project.
-
-
Host events at each of the 21 GROW schools to reinvigorate the GROW Project and Events will include:
-
Implementing hands-on activities, such as, garden planting, seed balls, or cooking workshops using garden produce, will allow Loving Spoonful to reconnect with students, teachers, and the school community.
-
Students, teachers and the wider school community will benefit from discussion and activities centred on key topic like: food security, food justice, food systems, culture, ecology and climate change.
-
-
Build and distribute 10 new Fresh Food Market Stands (FFMS)
-
FFMS provide individuals, families and the community with fresh and local food to the community, with no questions asked.
-
The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted our ability to host FFMS as organizations were closed, or were operating under limited capacity over the last 2 years.
-
There are currently 4 FFM stands throughout Kingston, however, with your support, we plan to expand the number of FFMS to enhance access to local food for more people in our community.
-
It has been a challenging past two years for so many. Receiving funds to reignite the GROW Project and Fresh Food Access will allow Loving Spoonful to build greater capacity, while also supporting the holistic growth and development of children and youth in our community. We value the importance of engaging students within wider community initiatives, and see that you too share that same passion! We thank you kindly in advance for this fantastic opportunity.
Sincerely,
Michelle Kehoe
